The Sillar Route

Managed by the network of sillar cutters, the Sillar Route is recognized for displaying “sillar”, a volcanic stone used for construction in Arequipa. That’s why Arequipa is known as the “White city”

9:30 hrs. Añashuayco Quarry

Once we arrive to Añashuayco, you will be able to observe all those murals where the sillar is carved manually and the routine that the workers in the area have.

You will also be able to see the Culebrilla Canyon, which is a naturally formed “pink canyon”. In addition to the “farallones” which are high ignimbrite walls. You can also see in this quarry, the church of the Society of Jesus (Compañía de Jesús) made by the workers.

Sillar Quarry and Añashuayco Valley

After an hour of visiting the Añashuayco Quarries, we will go to the Sillar Quarries, which is a protected natural area and a tourist spot that allows visitors to observe the origin of the Arequipa volcanic stone: the Sillar.

In general, from January to December, Arequipa has a very pleasant climate. Arequipa has an arid climate, the rains are more constant between December and March and it tends to be much warmer between September and October, reaching 20°C. But on average its climate tends to be 16 °C, in the coldest months it is from January to March.
